Mrs. Williams' Pound Cake.

When I was growing up, the local place to go in Waynesboro for cakes was this wonderful older lady who was simply known as "Mrs. Williams." She made the most fabulous tasting birthday cakes & pound cakes. She would usually have a supply of pound cakes in the freezer, ready to go. The birthday cakes had to be ordered in advance. She made them all in her home kitchen. Since she died quite a few years ago, I have never had a birthday cake that tasted like hers. I've also never known of her recipe for it being passed along. However, the pound cake recipe was obtained by someone, and slowly whispered around. I doubt that very many people ever became privy to it. But I have it. You will need a 16X4X4 loaf pan to make it in the same way that she did.

Waynesboro’s Famous Mrs. Williams’ Pound Cake

1 stick butter, softened
1/2 cup Crisco
2 1/2 cups sugar
3 1/2 cups plain flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon soda, dissolved in 1 tablespoon water
6 eggs
2 tsp lemon flavoring
2 tsp almond flavoring
1 TBSP vanilla extract

Cream crisco & butter, add sugar, cream together. Add eggs 1 at a time, beat well after each. Pour soda & water into cup of buttermilk, then add to mixture. Add flavorings, beat, add flour & salt. Beat until fluffy. Grease pan. Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes at 350°.
